Although the Department of Linguistics had been created in 1986, linguistics studies at USP have a long history, with the beggining dating back to 1940s, when it was created the chair of Indo-European Linguistics at the university on the innitiative of Theodoro Henrique Maurer Junior. A few years later, in 1962, a opinion by the Federal Counsil of Education introduces the discipline Linguistics in the curriculum of Letters. However, even though it was a compulsory subject a for all the students, Linguistics would only turn out to be one of the qualifications offered for the Letters students from 1972 onwards.
