USP GRADUATE PROGRAM IN LINGUISTICS

The Graduate Program in Linguistics is characterised by the solidity and wide-reaching nature of its lines of research, which engage theoretically and experimentally with all levels of linguistic analysis, from phonetics through to discourse, in addition to interfaces with various associated areas, such as Anthropology, Computer Science, History, Logic, Philosophy of Language, and Literary Studies. The Program has consistently received excellent scores in CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Pessoal de Nível Superior/Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) assessments for many years.

The Program's highly qualified teaching staff and its strong national insertion and vigorous international engagement offer Master’s and PhD students direct and ongoing contact with high-level research and researchers, enabling students to participate actively in contemporary debates about the development of language research in its multiple aspects. Many former alumni are currently professors and researchers in important state and federal public universities in Brazil.

Mission

The program's mission is to promote teaching, foster research, and disseminate scientifically produced knowledge about human language. The disciplines that make up the vast field of linguistic studies understand language as a universal and exclusive property of humans and consider all its manifestations as equally legitimate and valuable for understanding human nature. We are committed to training specialists in language sciences and staying connected to society, acting in social scenarios where the specialty proves relevant.

 Goals

  • To train masters and doctors to work as high-level researchers and as professors in higher education;
  • To contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge about human language and discourse, either from the perspective of each of the sub-areas of linguistics, or from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • To insert itself, with solidity and constancy, in the national and international environments in which the central debates of the area of investigation take place;
  • To contribute to the understanding and intervention in social issues that require linguistic reflection.
