This talk presents a comprehensive overview of research investigating first language (L1) attrition in L1 Spanish–L2 English bilinguals across both immersed and instructed context settings. First, I will revisit earlier work examining how exposure to an L2 impacts the production, interpretation, and real-time processing of null and overt subject pronouns. By comparing bilinguals in instructed environments with those living in L2-immersed settings, these findings illuminate the vulnerability of interface properties, specifically the syntax-pragmatics interface, and how varying degrees of L2 contact condition subtle shifts in native grammar dynamics.Building on this groundwork, I will then present recent empirical evidence expanding on L1 attrition within instructed bilingual populations. This line of inquiry focuses on structural interpretation preferences, specifically examining offline measures of anaphora resolution strategies and Relative Clause Attachment (RCA) ambiguities. By analysing current offline data alongside planned future extensions into real-time online processing methodologies, these studies evaluate whether native parsing preferences and interpretive biases undergo modifications under the influence of L2 instructional exposure alone, without long-term naturalistic immersion. Taken together, the combined findings contribute to theoretical models of bilingual language representation, language contact, and the stability of the native language system across diverse learning environments.
